For this project, I sourced a small batch of vintage BMW T-shirts from the 1990s and screen printed the iconic Grateful Dead 'Stealie' over the original designs. I explored the practices of up-cycling and the idea of recontextualization. The design could have been printed on new blank t shirts but since they weren’t they have official BMW product tags, because that’s what they are.
The accompanying promotional images were a carousel post on instagram that references BMW print advertising from the 70s through the 90s and adds a bit of the DIY whimsical charm that the Grateful Dead community is known for
The video below the photos was used as a teaser for the project, that built some anticipation for a BMW and the Grateful Dead project. The teaser video followed by the announcement made this a well rounded product release.
Also included is a photo of one of the shirts and the “Stealie” design before the screen was made. I have included this photo to give you a better understanding of the manufacturing process that went into making the shirts.
